Do What You’re Told!

February 23, 2026

For many of us, this phrase summarizes our upbringing. Listen to the authority figure, keep your head down, never question, and do what you’re told.

It worked great in a different era, but today it’s a losing strategy.

AI can do what it’s told better than most of us (perhaps all of us), so compliance and instruction-following has officially become automated.

As the world continues to evolve at breathtaking speeds, well-paying “do-what-you’re-told” jobs will become few and far between. In the modern era, the opposite wins.

Question what you’re told. Interrogate dogma and form your own conclusions. Synthesize multiple streams of “told” to discover something new. Deciphering meaning, examining what hasn’t been said, and connecting disparate ideas are the skills that unlock success today.

While doing what you’re told may feel safe, you’re actually handing your own safety over to someone who presumably knows better.

It’s a far riskier move than using your own judgment and creativity to do what you think makes the most sense.

Further, static instructions based on yesterday’s landscape rarely hit the target. Blindly following orders may be the riskiest move of all.

Think about the people you admire most. Chances are, they’re the ones who asked uncomfortable questions, took creative leaps, and trusted their own instincts even when the path wasn’t clear.

Let’s replace this outdated phrase, encouraging each other to find our own routes ahead. To forge our own path instead of adhering to a dusty old map.

In times of turbulence, it’s the ones who think for themselves that rise above the chaos into the rarefied heights of impact and success.

To your creative success…
