What’s Your Bounceback Plan?

February 16, 2026

What’s your plan for when you fall down? Not if—when.

We all have big goals. New Year’s resolutions, annual growth plans, personal commitments to be more patient or present. Great intentions and willpower get us started, but then the inevitable happens.

One late night throws off our new morning routine. A stressful week derails our commitment to practicing patience. A difficult quarter makes last year’s ambitious growth plan feel naive.

Now you’re off track, which is totally normal and part of any challenging endeavor. But unfortunately, this is where most people stay. They wallow in shame, convince themselves the goal was too hard or impossible, and resign themselves to disappointment.

The crucial missing component: a bounceback plan.

Before you start, develop a protocol for what you’ll do when you hit a speed bump. Recognize that setbacks are part of any meaningful pursuit, something to be expected rather than humiliated by.

Your bounceback plan should address five elements:

Recalibrate. Revisit the deeper purpose—the why—that got you started in the first place.

Action. Small, concrete steps to get back on your feet and into forward motion.

Mindset. Let go of any disappointment and self-criticism, focusing instead on the enthusiasm you had when you began.

Support. Identify your support crew long before you need them so you’ll know exactly who to call for a helping hand.

Learn. What lesson did the setback teach you, and how can you emerge stronger and more committed than ever?

Most strategies have no bounceback plan, which is why follow-through rates on commitments are generally low. It would be like expecting sunshine 365 days a year and never considering an umbrella, only to be completely derailed when the rain starts to fall.

The most successful people aren’t the ones who never stumble. They’re the ones who’ve mastered the art of getting back up quickly. They’ve normalized the setback as part of the journey, something to plan for rather than fear.

So whatever commitment you’re pursuing right now, ask yourself: What’s my bounceback plan?

If you don’t have one, build it today. Long before you need it.

To your creative success…
